Projectleider : Dr. M Nieuwenhuis, Ph.D.
Projecttitel : Evaluatie van functionele onafhankelijkheid in kinderen met brandwonden met de Functionele Onafhankelijkheids Maat voor kinderen (WeeFIM): een pilot studie
Jaar aanvang :2008
Duur :12 maanden
Bedrag :

€ 37.750

Organisatie :VSBN

Background
Major improvements in burn care in the 20th century have caused a shift in attention from mortality towards the functional outcome of burns. Because public health and interventions are driven by the analysis of appropriate outcomes at the community and clinical levels, measuring functional outcomes is important. To do so, a core set of instruments based on the framework of the International Classification of Functioning are a necessity. Although progress has been made, a generic instrument concerning the activity domain in children with burns is still urgently needed. At the moment the best option for such an instrument is felt to the Functional Independence Measure for children (WeeFIM).

Objective(s)
Cross cultural adaptation and preliminary testing of the WeeFIM in paediatric burn patients

Methods
The study will involve all consecutive children in the age of 6 months - 16 years with acute burns admitted to one of the three Dutch burns centres (and possibly 1 'Dutch-speaking' Burn centre in Belgium) during a period of 5 months. The WeeFIM will be translated into Dutch and adapted according to international guidelines. To test feasibility, the WeeFIM will be administered 2-3 weeks postburn, and 3 and 6 months postburn. Inclusion rate, frequency of missing answers per item and administration time will be evaluated. Responsiveness of the WeeFIM is assessed using the anchor-based Minimal Important Change distribution method.

Anticipated results
First of all a Dutch version of the WeeFIM will become available. Secondly, the study will show whether assessment of functional independence of children with burns using the WeeFIM is feasible and potentially worthwhile. If so, this pilot provides the data necessary for a full scale validation study.
